Learning How To Learn

To be a successful technologist is to be a lifelong learner. In this class students are introduced to the ProClassesLive learning system, and given the fundamentals of learning new technologies. This class meets only once is and is required for all new students.

Web Design I

This course is an introduction to web design with HTML and CSS. Students will learn the structural elements of a webpage, understand the relationship of HTML to content, begin the process of internalizing accessibility guidelines, as well as developing well designed pages that are marked up semantically. By the end of the class, students will produce a 3 page website and HTML tagged resume. These products can be used later in a portfolio to demonstrate mastery to potential employers.

Image Manipulation I

In this class we will be using GNU's image manipulation program (GIMP) to create and modify bitmap images such as gif, jpg, and png. GIMP is free to download and use, and is similar to other popular image manipulation programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

Web Design II

By this stage students have the capability to create a full, handicap accessible, professional looking web site. Responsive design is introduced and all work can be displayed equally well on differing devices using media queries. Students have the option in this class to expand the website built in Web Design One to a full 8 page, or to create a brand new 5 page site from scratch. In either case, students continue to add to the professional portfolio.

JavaScript I

JavaScript has become the fastest growing, most widespread language in use today. In this class, students will learn basic programming fundamentals as well as techniques to manipulate the visual aspects of the web browser. By class completion students will enhance a website with JavaScript to make it more user friendly (UX). Additionally, students will create a small application (app) that runs on both web and mobile.

Image Manipulation II

This class will explore image manipulation further by using Inkscape, a free open source drawing program, to create and manipulate vector graphic files. Inkscape performs a similar function to Adobe Illustrator.

Web Design III

In the third and final class on web design, students will continue to expand on the techniques from earlier classes, but Bootstrap will be introduced as an industry standard time saving framework. The final artifact for this class will be a real client based project. Students will find a client within their network, and build a site to their specifications in order to simulate a real world experience.

JavaScript II

In part II of the JavaScript series of courses, students will go deeper into programming concepts with the JavaScript language. Frameworks such as jQuery, Angular and React will be introduced. The final outcome for this class is a web/mobile app with multiple features. Studens will work using the Agile/Scrum workflow model.

Server Side Scripting with PHP

This course focuses on server side programming with PHP. Students will become familiar with web servers such as Apache and NGINX, database design and programming, and server side app development. The final outcome will be a dynamic application such as a message board or blog. Ambitious students might tackle creating a simple social network.

Portofolio is a chance for students to house all their work under one online umbrella such that employers can easily assess skill level. The portofolio should contain a combination of 5 websites and apps. Additionally, graphic work from the image classes should be included here. Students will also create a finished resume to add to the portfolio. At this level, students should also begin seeking internships.

Networking Technologies

Computers are all around us, and as technologists we need to be familiar with the infrastructure that supports our work. To that end students will learn computer hardward and networking principals. Additionally, students will be given an opportunity to research a new technology of their choice. The desired outcome of this class is the ability of students to discuss modern computer technology competently.

Server Side JavaScript with Nodejs

Nodejs is server side, asychronous JavaScript. It is very popular for creating APIs. In addition to learning API development, students will build both a client using client side languages as well as a server using Nodejs. Popular applications include applications such as chat, or multiplayer games.
